One thing for sure
You hear a lot of wailing about vanished textile jobs. There were a lot of them in the South.
Fast food jobs and other retail jobs are better than textile jobs if you can stand working on weekends. The pay is better and the upward mobility is better. I'm sure that some of the lost mfg jobs were great but many of them would be the subject of liberal teeth knashing if they were still around
