Power supplies - you're right.

The power supply that came with this particular piece of sh - - this box was allegedly 350 watts and weighed about 4.5 ounces. Shoulda known something.

It went out about a month after I put the computer together. I tore one out of an old computer and plugged it in without installing it. That worked for a few months, and I finally got a 500W affair from CompUSA. Don't know why 500W, except that I was fed up. My computer needs 500W like I need more weight.

But, the box was cheap - $30 with power supply (which failed).

Anyway, the big P/S fits, runs, and powers the 6 fans, I just added one blowing onto the CPU fan and 2 HDs so I guess it's OK. That's a neat selection process they take you through on that page, though.

RobVG had a real problem, too. That's funny, sort of, because I had a similar experience when someone gave me a Compaq which was also designed to be put together once and not taken apart. It is now parts, with the HD in this computer, though I had to re-format it three times.
I'm getting a bit leery of name brands. He seemed to handle it well - that's the sort of thing I have to put down for a while and come back to. Next year. Or the year after, but I'm not married. There may be some information there I don't want to process.

And if my brother-in-law weren't so darned good at everything he does, I could probably get away with a lot more than I do. The guy is not only a genius, he's meticulous, reads directions, is patient, and nice. Friendly. Helpful, in a low-key sort of way.

(Someone backed into my car and didn't cop to it. One Christmas Eve in a church parking lot. "Why don't you get one in a wrecking yard and bring it over - we'll take care of it?" After a few mild protests I hurried off and found a door the same color, etc. Do you know there are about 400 adjustments on those things? Actually about 40, if I were honest. And most of them affect each other. It isn't a matter of 4 bolts, which is what I thought. Took us together about an hour, would have taken him 45 minutes without my help. Part of me can't help but hate him, but I need him to much to let it show.)

Anyway, you're right. A person should spend a bit more, and avoid some petty problems.

Thanks.
