The role of Islamic law in the new Iraq is a very difficult issue

If the Iraqi people in a particular city or region want Islamic law, and all that comes with it, can we really say no to them? Is that wise? We have our own values, and very good ones they may be, but we must be careful about "forcing tolerance" on a very conservative Muslim society. Of course we all believe that men and women should be free, and that a free adult should be free to have a drink once in a while, and that a free woman should be able to work and travel freely and appear in public unveiled, in clothing of her own free choice. But the Iraqis will need to discover and accept these freedoms on their own; we can't force it upon them. The best we can do is help them set up the machinery of a democratic state, and then get out of the way and let the Iraqis take it where they may, and good luck to them.
