Space junk?

Are all those landers and probes mere space junk, or are they shrines to the acheivements of intelligent life in the universe? Would the transport of a few extremeophiles to Mars be a disaster or would their impact be localized and minimal? On a more fundamental level, is spreading life to dead worlds a bad thing to do?
