you're right, it is an absolute pain to keep trying various index numbers, esp. when I have only the vaguest idea of the dates of the thread. Also, I keep getting 'message ID unknown' back .. Maybe this is something to do on a *really* slow day. Thanks Rob for your help - appreciated. Daniel
