You might be better off if you don't draw attention to what Al Gore might have done in the face of a recession and an attack on the United States.
Tax cuts to fight the recession? Maybe targeted ones to reliable Democratic voters, i.e. those who don't pay many taxes. Net gain to the private economy--nil.
Stopped 9/11? I did a LOT of looking, and did not see terrorism as a major Gore campaign issue in 2000. I am open to correction if someone can point me to a quote. Of course, like every other Democratic politician, now he says he never thought of anything else.
Does anyone see upgrading the CIA and FBI, and enhancing the security powers of these agencies, as something Gore would have made a top priority prior to 9/11? Headlines: "Al Gore supports massive new funding for intelligence agencies." Sound plausible to you?
I would lay even money that he would not have invaded Afghanistan after 9/11.
Oh, he would have bombed the heck out of the training camps, and other selected targets, and done his damndest to try and nail Osama from the air, but do you really think he would have gone in to eliminate the Taliban government, occupy the country on the ground, and replace the government with a new one?
Saddam would still be firmly in power. There would never have been American troops surrounding Iraq, sanctions and tyranny would still be killing Iraqis, and the U.N. would be settling down for a long career of having the wool pulled over its eyes during inspections and pumping oil-for-food cash into its coffers.
Pakistan and the other Arab nations would still be cooking up nuclear weapons.
And France would still think we suck.
Oh, and I've noticed that the Democrats aren't that eager to draw attention to Kerry either.

Al Gore, and alternate history.
