re: How Texans think

"Iraq is not a mistake," Staton said. "We can't let them do to us what they did in New York." Like many Americans, she sees the war as retribution for Sept. 11.

Sad, no?"

To see the US attacking Afghanistan or Iraq for the sake of revenge would be a fairly sad reasoning- irrational reasoning. But I doubt that Texans generally or in this case specifically think this way. Firstly, I doubt Texans are generally extremely fond of New York City or it's inhabitants. Instead of revenge, I think more of the emphasis is on fixing a problem- it's a national problem, it's an attack on America and is therefore an attack on Texans.

As far as having a general opinion that Saddam could be behind 911, the recent news about the corruption of the UN Oil for Food program strongly suggest that Saddam *could* have a large chunk of responsiblity for 911.
I would say if the recent evidence of UN corruption are true, then there is reasonable cause for suspecting that Saddam could be responsible for 911, and more than this, even a major factor in financially supporting in general, the international terrorism groups. This doesn't mean I think there is enough evidence to prove this in a court of law, but treating Saddam's regime as a "suspect" in the investigation seems reasonable. And having the opinion that Saddam is responsible is about as valid as thinking some building contractor's airhead son who went on a jihad in Afghanistan is responsible for building international terror network[opposed to merely becoming a new vocal member of an existing terror network].

I think the unwillingness to suspect that a man, who was a true believer of a fascist political group with the goal of conquering the Middle East and the world, and who used terrror to gain control of the sovereign power of Iraq, would be unwilling to work with people who are willing to commit mass murder as a means of gaining power is the sad part. It's as sad as thinking the Mob wouldn't get involved in selling drugs. It's like thinking theives are a noble. Or that buying the Brooklyn bridge is a wonderful investment opportunity.
I would say without a clue and yes, sad.
