I don't see the problem here.

Arbitration organizations do meaningful work for all faiths, and also for some neighborhood and work-related groups.

According to the article, and as Geoff has pointed out, it would deal with civil disputes only, and by at least nominal mutual consent.

It's true that many things which appear consensual on the surface involve some unseen pressure and even abuse. This isn't unique to Muslim societies by any means. But it appears to me that enough people in the Canadian Muslim community are aware of the opportunities for pressure and abuse so that the lights on those areas will be turned up high, by Muslims, as they should be.

Any woman who is concerned about her marital status or personal rights as a married individual need only make sure the marriage is not only binding under sharia, but also under Canadian law, in other words, a civil marriage to go with a mosque wedding. Sharia law will not be able to nullify a contract governed by Canadian law, only a contract governed by sharia.
