Space/Science » in reply to Very long trips in space and the urge

I have always thought this is nonsense...

So many sci-fi novels have sexual intrigue as part of the plot....I think that is nonsense... those that seem to think that men and women cant work together without sex becoming an issue must have issues themselves- it is just stupid to assume that the best and brightest we send off will somehow become slaves to their sex drives- it is really just silly... the majority of adults can control their urges, those that cant would not be selected for any important mission...

The idea of sexual tension in sci fi stories about long term space missions is not based on fact, it is just a (simplistic) plot device... I am not claiming that people can turn that drive off, just that we can be above it and take the importance of what we do to be more important...

Ben Bova is the WORST offender in the sci fi genre in this area- he seems to need to add gratuitous sex in every novel, and even worse make it a plot point...

Seriously, do you really think professionals selected from the best of the best would not be able to act like professionals? The whole issue as far as I am concerned is nonsense that gets press for the titillation issue...

It is a non issue....
