re: Universalists . . .

An Honorary Doctor of Laws at the Universities of St. Andrews and Oxford, Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) (and president of the Pennsylvania Society for the Abolition of Slavery) comes easily across as a "Universalist". The term sounds familiar--likely from very distant high school--so it must be concidered frankly new to me. It does, though, seem very appropriate for Franklin. And in 1787, at 81 years of age and suffering from the gout himself, I have no doubt this noble "Sage of the Constitutional Convention" imbibed more than a "tad" throughout the course of his busy day.

Interestingly enough:
Franklin’s presence served mostly to promote moderation in the proceedings. With the oratory often degenerating into threats and accusations, he appealed for daily prayers as a means to promote unity.

Benjamin Franklin: businessman, writer, publisher, scientist, diplomat, legislator, and social activist. An amazing man, for an amazing time.

"Our Constitution is in actual operation; everything appears to promise that it will last; but in this world nothing is certain but death and taxes."
-- Benjamin Franklin, in a letter to M. Leroy, 1789.
