Consider our civilization: will it persist? We think all this technology is really cool. But what if the bottom drops out, some critical element fails. For example, what if energy resources are insufficient, key materials run out or are irretrievably contaminated, or a competing species arises that gives us a run for our money without any technology at all? Then technology might not seem so important in the scheme of things.
What if biological change rather than technological change is really the best route to ensure our survival? A few tens of thousands of years from now, maybe we'll retain only rudimentary tools, but maybe we'll be vastly superior just based on biology.
What if we decide to spawn young without skeletons, better suited to survival in zero-gravity? What if they speak their own language and we don't understand it?
