What did he try to do? Get suspended while still alive? Personally I think it is still suicide with current suspension technology.
The way I see cryonic "survival" happening for dead cryonauts, rather than suspended live ones, is a destructive scan of the brain creating a model mind to be reinstated in a reconstructed body - perhaps rebuilt via advanced "tissue printing" techniques. MRI and similar scanning tech is getting closer and closer to neuron level resolution. Personally I think memory is stored as distinct settings of synaptic buds [retracted or extended representing a "neuro-bit"] while the overall structure instantiates the "mind/self". So scanning at synaptic level, rather than a full neurochemical scan, will be sufficient.
However ice-crystal formation will have mashed most neurons and probably messed up the synaptic structure. Thawing would make things even worse, so a destructive microscan with a microtome and a scanner, or some sort of laser/evaporator will be needed to record the brain - if anything is left.
Just a thaw-ought.
