Nowadays, most senior students in industrialized, western nations are
more interested in sports, entertainment & sex than what is taught in science classes.
Science teachers can make their science courses more appealing to many of those
students....
(1) If the student is more interested in sports, then the science teacher
should show how physics, medical science, and technology play
a very important role in ANY sports competition or extreme competition
[mountain-biking, skate-boarding, etc.]
(2) If the student is more interested in entertainment [video-games, Hip-Hop 'music', movies, TV, rides at the amusement park]
then the science teacher should show how science & technology
play an important role in the entertainment industry.
There would be no modern entertainment industry without technology
[DVD's, computers, cyberspace, video, etc...]
And for the average student entering college?
Make Calculus fun, and practical, for them!...And use computer-graphics to show how it can be done more easily!
Give them science projects that are both challenging, exciting and practical, and applicable to everyday living.
cheers.

Maybe part of the solution would be to have teachers make science & engineering subjects more interesting to all.
