re: Thermodynamics and Space Travel

Years ago, I read about an interesting idea to increase the efficiency of space radiators. The idea was to use alternating electrostatic fields to bounce dust between the plates of a radiator. Dust would be attracted to a radiator where it would absorb heat. The electrostatic field would be reversed, repelling the dust towards the other plate. Since dust has a very high surface area to volume ratio, it would lose the heat quickly. Once at the other plate, it would absorb more heat and begin the cycle again. It was thought that such an approach would be more efficient at radiating heat than simple plates alone.

I don't know if anything ever came of the idea or what it was called. I don't even know if it would really work but it seems like a sound idea. I didn't find anything on Goggle about the idea but perhaps I was using the wrong search criteria.
