Another option would be to have a properly limited government, instead of the current leviathan where the elected officials have nearly god-like power over our lives and property. Then it wouldn't do that much damage if they were morons.
A long time ago in this country it was more important who was mayor than who your Senator was, and "don't make a Federal case out of it" had a real meaning.
