re: 1968
for me 1968 was quite special: that's when I got interested in space and that's when humans left Earth's orbit for the first time!
Me too, Raoul. The episode of "From the Earth to the Moon" about Apollo 8, titled just "1968", has a special poignancy for me. We were being battered back and forth then, and Apollo 8 saved 1968 for everybody.
It was good to step back and put today's world in a historical context. In the heat of battle it can sometimes seem that things are on the edge of falling apart. But the very fact that we're having the argument, that Americans care so much that they sometimes go overboard in defense of their own vision of America, is in its way reassuring. We at least have in common that we want the best for our country.
