re: A blow to Iraq's "democracy"

I've heard there's a small but growing (and bi-partisan) movement suggesting just that--that we need to quit Iraq, and soon. Bringing democracy to that country, it's suggested, is at odds with the history and society of the place. It's an argument I'm finding easier and easier to beleive.

Maybe because of what we've done, the middle east will be a democratic region in a century instead of the three it might have taken otherwise. Or maybe we've played too many violent cards and have dealt democracy out. Time will tell.

In any case, it seems to me that permitting the election of a puppet government and then attempting to steer Iraq from within the walls of the US embassy is probably a path to sure rebellion. Unfortunately, I'd also expect it's exactly what's planned. Doesn't really seem like it's in the true spirit of democracy.

For the sake of the people who will staff it, I hope that embassy has really, really thick walls.
