.. he was 'practising' field theory for the last 30 years of his life - whether he 'got it right' (or at least went in the right direction viz. unification) is still an open question as far as I know

Seriously, I hope to get the chance in future to get into some physics discussions with you (and others). You're an astronomer or astrophysicist, right? Could you tell me (or point me to a previous thread) about what you're working on?
