Who has served the President well?

First though, this line from the text of Gore's speech, quoted from Charles Graner:

I love to make a groan man piss on himself. [sic]

It could be interesting to examine the life history of that typo...if in fact it is one.

Anyway, considering Gore's recommendations, I'm just not sure about Rumsfeld, re: stay on or resign. It seems to me the yardstick of his own design is probably sufficient: if he can no longer be effective, he goes. Some will say, of course, that he has yet to show any evidence of effectivness.

Of Bush's team, it seems to me the most damaging influence on the President's thinking has come from Cheney and Wolfowitz. If their positions had been filled by people closer in character to Rice or Powell, I think we'd all be better off today. Even if the war had still occurred, I'd bet we'd have been vastly better prepared for the post-war difficulties.

IMHO, Wolfowitz especially has not served his nation well at all. Asked during the 9/11 hearings how many Americans had died in the conflict to date, he offered that it was around 500, when at the time it was actually well over 700. I guess he feels such trivialities are beneath him.
