"I don’t think he could have handled the 9/11 situation had he been president."

I don't know about that. I've given that some thought, considering the narrow space between the alternate futures.

A lot would have depended on who ended up in his cabinet. I've never seen a list of who he had in mind (I assume there was one. Any candidate would have one.) Would a lot of Clinton's people just moved on forward? Who knows?

He would not have invaded Iraq, which probably would have made a lot of liberals happy. In fact, I would bet that he would not have invaded Afghanistan, at least in the sense of going in with ground troops, forcing a regime change, and occupying the country.

I see Gore as attacking Afghanistan's terror camps with major air strikes, more or less a repeat of Kosovo or Desert Fox. There would have been few if any U.S. casualties. Whether or not this would have nailed anyone like bin Laden is problematical. The air strikes we did do were not enough to utterly destroy al Qaeda, and they had to be chased on the ground.

And of course, as with Desert Fox, when the bombing stopped eventually, the tyrants would still in charge, and everyone would come back.

Interviewing Gore on this subject now would be useless, as he has the same hindsight every other politician has on this subject. I wish someone had asked him after 9/11. The closest speech I've been able to nail down right after 9/11 is this one, from September 29, 2001.

And from a parallel parody universe, we have this:
