disappointed astronauts ..

Yes I can imagine the resentment by the others he 'skipped over' to command Apollo 14, after 15 minutes of flight experience! He must have known he could do it all along - the triumph of drive and self confidence.

Probably Lovell and Haise were the most disappointed - A14 went to Fra Mauro, where A13 was supposed to have landed. At the end of his (terrific) book, Lovell mentions himself (in third person) watching at Mission Control, without comment, Shepard and Mitchell bouncing around Fra Mauro. Lovell and Haise got no closer than 50 miles or so, and then had to watch it receding as they left it behind forever ..

Particularly hard on Lovell because he was a Gemini and Apollo veteran - his whole career had been leading up to this.
