They actually had more trouble being on the outside of the crater at that point. Karatepe is at the southwest rim of the crater, and with Opportunity (in the very slightly southern hemisphere) heading into winter, the sun will be slightly north in the sky, so being over the edge, and having the panels facing north might be a benefit.
