In the new international environment, U.S. intervention overseas lessens—rather than enhances—the nation’s security.
This article, like so many of its kind, is long on sweeping generalities and devoid of specifics.
What exactly is involved in curtailing our overseas intervention? (Can we temporarily ignore the matter of resisting further temptation to invade other countries, since 9/11 was obviously not a response to the invasion of Iraq?)
Are we talking about withdrawing our military from foreign bases? Limiting the involvement of American business in foreign ventures? Putting an end to overseas intelligence gathering? Disbanding the CIA?
I suppose we can assume that our foreign aid programs are not considered "intervention." Can someone then offer--in terms at least approaching the specific--what it is they don't want from us?
What must we do, or stop doing, so that we'll no longer be perceived as arrogant and self-absorbed? (And--dare I dream--they stop hating and trying to kill us.)
