re: Sovereign states

After reading the article, I went back to find who the author was and, well, no wonder. He's not impartial of course.

If the Arab league countries obviously have big problems, lack of democracy, violence, etc....they must solve them on their own. They must understand their problems and solve them without outside interference.

. After every world war, the rules of international law have changed, and the same will happen after the present one.
International law has a basic principle: non interference in internal matters of states and that won't change.
This is the beauty of the notion of sovereign state. It has existed since 1648 . It obviously has been rejected a number of times, but it also defines "war" as conflict between nations, which means it's possible to stop it with a treaty and then live in peace. The UN can also play a role from that moment on, to see that the treaty is respected.

With the Iraq issue, we have an agressor and invader which has a DOD budget 22 times higher than the GNP of Iraq, and yet, it's incapable of winning the peace and reconstruct the country. The price of interference is chaos, uncertainty no chance of democracy the way we know it anytime soon and an enormous risk of installing an extremely religious regime.

However, what's going on now isn't a war because we're not fighting states, but terrorists spread all around the world and the rules of conflict must be adapted to this.
The terrorists are quicker to adapt as they produce their own rules (like using suicide bombers, TV news). We must realize we're always a conflict late.

Failing to see this, will worsen the problem, not solve it.
