Telescopes and sacred places
The U of Arizona had the same problems when they went to build telescopes on Mt. Graham in Southern Arizona. First the local native Americans claimed it a sacred site. Somehow they got past that one. The next obstacle was the radical environmentalists who claimed that a rare red squirrel lived in the area and would be endangered. They also beat back that problem and it turned out that after the telescope was built, the squirrel population actually increased. Guess astronomers like to feed squirrels.
By the way, there's a new wildfire at the base of Mt. Graham. Let's keep our fingers crossed it doesn't present the final obstacle to the telescopes there.
