Error correcting codes, Cassini & wireless 3G

Amazingly, yet again mathematical advances in data transmission and error correcting codes have enabled a richer data set from Cassini and also provide commercial wireless applications. I worked on this stuff way back in the late 70s when the early Reed-Solomon codes were first applied to disk storage devices for mainframe computers.

This latest stuff was invented by Alain Glavieux and Claude Berrou, at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications de Bretagne in Brest. These indecipherable alien names give some credence to the idea that we have stolen technology from space aliens.
