Well, simply leaving them in Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, or whatever would not have worked very well either, would it?
I suppose we could have plopped them into the American justice system and made a media circus out of each one. You'd have loved that, I suppose. I'm trying to recall any historical situation where conventional POWs availed themselves of the legal justice system of the nation that captured them.
What we have seems to be working. Just because it pisses liberals off doesn't mean it's a bad idea.
Prisoners have been treated, by and large, well enough in Guantanamo. A hell of a lot better than captured Americans have been treated by our enemies.
Now that I think about it, it's been sixty years since America has been in a war or any other conflict where captured Americans have ever been treated anywhere close to in accord with the Geneva conventions.
Hold up Guantanamo as an example, and ask U.S. veterans who had been captured by the Japanese, North Koreans, North Vietnamese, Iraqis, and others--the veterans who survived--if they would have traded places.
