Ralph Peters
Peters is a guy well worth reading. His extensive experience as an Army 'troubleshooter' a.k.a. Intel officer throught the Third world and in many Islamic countries gives him personal ground truth insight. Unfortunately the State Dept is filled with Ivy League educated ivory tower Arabist leaning intellectuals with no field experience outside of embassy visits. Always has been so for some perverse reason.
I've bought and read his non-fiction and he's also written fiction set in Islamic lands. Pre 911.
