The Universe is Truly VAST. Distances between technological civilizations are HUGE.
Even if life is very common, technological civilizations will STILL be rare. Add to this the problems associated with receiving non-beamed transmission, and you see that ACCIDENTAL discovery is unlikely. The only chance to detect beamed transmission is if the sender is sending in our direction deliberately. This is very unlikely. Hence, I doubt any near-term success in detecting ET.
