Speaking of Mercury.

I've been reading on the unusual size of Mercury's iron core, and came up with a hypothesis. Could Mercury be the core of a hot jupiter? The remnants of a gas giant that had its outer layers stripped away by the solar wind. Many of the solar systems we've discovered in the past nine years have gas giants orbiting close to their parent star. Could it also have been the case in the early history of our own solar system?
