I think the basic problem we have is that some politicians, made comfortable by the lack of scrutiny given them by a sympathetic press, have gotten a bit careless with telling the truth about some things, or embellishing things for political effect. The sympathetic press isn't the only source of information any more, and a few politicians aren't adapting very well.
