"Barely literate?" Sure you don't want to rephrase that?
The motivation of Viet Nam vets can be a number of things from simply wanting to do what's right, covering up or being embarassed about their own atrocities in Viet Nam after Kerry's admissions there, or financial or power gains as evidenced by the huge bankroll their organization seems to get from Republican power brokers.
I don't see how putting themselves in the limelight serves any purpose in "covering up" any faults of their own. They know damn well that every reporter within miles will now do their damnedest to find dirt on each one of them.
None of these veterans are making one red cent on this. Donations are going to costs of ads and websites.
Now, Michael Moore:
Now let's look at the worst of Moore's possible motivations - financial success. Seems to me that if that was his intent he'd be making Arnold Schwartzeneger action flicks instead of documentaries which typically have a lower box office draw. Also he wouldn't always have to go after one side. It would be equally profitable going after both parties. The fact that he seems to stay focused on issues that don't add significantly to his bankroll (compared to conservative causes which can greatly increase a person's worth), he tends to come across to most as genuine.
He also writes books, and knows damn well who his audience is. Do you really think if he had made pro-conservative movies, that he'd be sitting on all those movie awards right now? His documentaries cost a few hundred thousand dollars, which mean they start making money practically the first day.
Not sure where the idea that "conservative causes" are the most lucrative comes from. Been to Hollywood lately? And I'm completely lost by the idea that the issues he is focused on have not added to his bankroll.
Now for the veteran's group. It is certainly a possibility that Kerry is lying through his teeth and they are truly concerned about the future under his leadership but, they've had 30 years to fight against the man if that was so compelling an issue to them. He certainly rose to a position of power in the Senate that should've incensed them just as much. What takes away from their credibility is the suddenness it became a problem to them. The most telling thing to me is the amount of money that very rapidly was channeled into this group.
A small number of the Swift Boat Veterans have been after Kerry since the war in Vietnam. O'Neill is the prime example. Most of these men are people who were not political, and didn't think it was important until it looked like Kerry had a shot at being President. Kerry has spent most of his Senate career being Kennedy's Renfield.
Ask yourself how many of the current anti-Bush websites and groups were in existence before Bush became a candidate in 2000.
The amount of money coming into this group (around half a million so far last time I heard) is dwarfed by the amounts funneled into Moveon.org and its sister groups. For some reason, nobody on the left seems to think there's anything wrong with those groups.
Current Events » in reply to hmm do we have video of Kerry staring dumbfounded on his swift boat?
Wow. Hard to know where to even start on this one.
