Artifacts in past mars photos

Lots of the rover photos have missing parts. So called "black monoliths" and other greyish/whitish missing sections that didn't squeeze through the bandwidth I imagine. I would think this is just a tiny missing piece of the photo. If so might it get filled in during a future download?
