First, if Belgium had been a slave state, I'm not sure my mother (who's a US citizen) would have met my father.
Second, NATO is an international organization to which Belgium belongs, Belgium pays its part, for which it shares the burden; I was drafted in 1982; did you serve in the army?
Meaning: preventing the Soviet Union from invading western Europe was an international effort.
