cut corners
cut testing
run short on manpower
no telemetry

and worse
far less redundant air bags

He did most of the things that contributed to the lander failure and worse after those failures were publicized. I always thought Don was overly harsh on the guy, but not so much anymore. Don gets something right every now and then (mostly here not CE). ;-)
