I can think of a few reasons to Google a potential employee's name:
1. Look for newspaper articles relating to criminal convictions, such as embezzlement. That kind of thing seldom shows up on a resume and former employers hesitate to reveal such information because they might get sued. Of course, you need to make sure you're talking about the person applying for the job. Names are not unique.
2. Look for published papers and the like.
3. Look for "lifestyle issues" that could be a potential hazard to the company, e.g. advocacy of illegal activity or perhaps someone who's a major contributor to "Conspiracies Everywhere!" type websites.
Go ahead and Google your own name and see what shows up. The last time I did it, I found several references to other people with the same name. I also found a reference to an old website that I ran years ago on the Bad Astronomy website. It was kind of cool.
