Secretary of State Colin Powell, the most senior U.S. official to visit Afghanistan in 25 years, promised Thursday the United States would help rebuild the country and wipe out the "contamination" of terrorism.

Presidential speech, July 30, 2004

Today, Afghanistan is a rising democracy, an ally in the war on terror, a place where many young girls now go to school for the first time, and America and the world are safer. (Applause.)

Before September the 11th, Pakistan was a safe transit point for terrorists. Today, Pakistani forces are aggressively helping to round up the terrorists. They're an ally in the war on terror, and America and the world are safer. (Applause.)
