Whatever you do, don't use rum flavoring. Plain nasty in anything.
If one added the rum to the water, in its proper proportions, and then heated the mixture up until steaming, would the alcohol be sufficiently evaporated to be harmless, but leave the flavor behind?
Buttered rum without the rum sounds more like spiced hot butterscotch. Attractive, but no edge.
