My guess

The shadow is of the photographer (Prof. Lewin)

The Sun is directly behind his head. It has a full ring around it: typical atmospheric phenomenon, caused by ice crystals in the upper altitudes.

The photograph is of a reflection of the ring - Prof. Lewin is providing an eclipse so as not to overexpose the shot.
