Hmmm, june 20th, june 20th..... Summer solstice? Highest the sun is in the sky in Boston? Lets get in his head. Is it in a construction area because it's the only space in Boston with an open dirt surface? It it because they spray water on the ground to keep the dust down in an urban area?
Call me crazy, this looks like theres a lense of material behind the photographer. If it's a lense, it's imperfectly focusing the sun on the ground and the glory rings are the chromatic abberation from the lens. It almost looks like an aperature phenomena which would be consistent with a couse on wave phenomea.
Uh, but actually looking at his syllabus, it could be anything.
Heres a question that you folks who can easily post graphics can answer. Where is the center of the circal formed by the chromatic ring? Is it a ring or a weak ellipse? Please post.

Lewin took the above picture in a construction area in Massachusetts on June 20.
