You've experienced the joys of Current Events, so you know what a rabidly partisan group these Zoners be. Nothing short of a lobotomy would allow a Zoner to separate politics from everything else in the universe. If you can think of a way to remove the politics gland from a Zoner without killing the patient, please share!
Although it can sometimes be taken to unhealthy extremes, I think this general tendency to drift offtopic is basically a healthy thing. Smart people, with lots of facts available and the neuronal engines to connect them, have a natural tendency to follow a train of thought a very long way. Normal people go from point A to point B. Geniuses travel from A to Z with the same effort.
Remember Aesop's fable about the scorpion and the turtle? Zoners have to be true to their natures just like the scorpion. Forgive them--they can't help themselves.
