Current Events » in reply to Larry, I doubt any of them *do* care about their jobs.

Then that's the root of their problem

Yes, I have worked in my share of crummy, low paying jobs ranging from bagging groceries to drink waiter to clerking at a convience store. While at each of these jobs, I remembered by father's advice: "It's easier to get a job when you have a job." Putting yourself out of a job with a poor attitude isn't exactly a career enhancing move.

Crummy customer service is often the cause of crummy customers. If some clerk shows a bad attitude to the customers, why should he be surprised when they do the same to him in return? When you're dealing with the public, you're going to come face to face with the reality that a certain percentage of all people are assholes. It goes with the job. You can deflect most of them with a good attitude and the rest, just deal with them as quickly as possible.

There are quite a few businesses out there that will never see any of my money again due to poor service, and I'm by no means the only one. Ultimately, if enough customers get pissed at the poor service that they take their business elsewhere, then the clerks will soon be out of a job. Which is better, a crummy job or no job at all?

The thing to remember is that, without the customers, there is no job and no paycheck.
