However, it seems the Irish situation is rather fundamentally different, no?
But your point still stands, of course. It is very difficult to honorably do this, and to get a good result. And in the UK's case, both sides in the end did want a reasonable settlement. Taht does not seem to be the csae with the Al Qaeda.
