Getting shot back then wasn't as glamorous as Hollywood sometimes shows. You get shot in the stomach, you would have a slow death. Get shot in a limb, it would probably get infected and the limb would have to be amputated.

While the Europeans were dueling and sword fighting, across the Pacific the Orientals had Karate. I studied Karate for a couple of years. It is a very discipline sport. Karate is all about self defense. People think it is all about fighting, but it is not. They teach to never attack unless you are attacked. The reasoning is that if everyone learned this, there would be no fighting.
