The gun control advocates have their mouthpieces. The NRA is apparently the Devil. (Actually, their leadership have been acting like jackasses for years, but that doesn't sound as threatening.) So let another organization take point.
The object is to have open debate with both sides represented by credible groups, not to have one side represented on talk shows by suits and the other by man-in-the-street interviews. There will have to be a compromise, and another, and another, until we get to a point where everyone is rather unhappy but can live with the result. That will stick. We won't get a result like that if the side that is being pressured to give up something perceives that they're being placed in the same category as a crazy 20-year-old from the Connecticut suburbs.

Do we really want to get into a situation where they believe they have no input?
