That musing reminded me of a kid's cartoon show I watched with my kids years back. It was called "Doug." Doug finds a couple of hundred dollars on the ground. He takes it to the cops, who say they'll look for the owner, but if nobody claims it in a month, he can have it. A month passes, no sign of the owner. Doug gets the money with the blessings of the law, more cash than he's ever seen before. He's a hero for doing the right thing, too.

Then, I forget exactly how, Doug finds out some old lady on the far side of town lost that amount of money. She's not quite all there, and never reported it.

Now what? The money is legally Doug's. But after sweating bullets about it, he returns the money anyway. The sweet, dotty old lady rewards him - with a stick of gum. His friends think he's the biggest dummy ever. But his cool older sister, who usually has no time for him, smiles in approval and takes him out for a malt.
