ET life is much more likely than finding intelligence... life has been on earth for 3 billion years... humans for a few thousand, and humans capable of communicating across interstellar distances only 50-100 at most.
I think we will detect traces of life on other planets within the next century... but ETI, we, as a race, may never find...
Believe me, if I am wrong I will be the first to celebrate.
This leads to an interesting question... how would we react to finding ETI?
How would religion react to finding a race at equal or greater advancement?
If we learned that all our science was kindergarden level how would I react?
First contact would mean an overturn of all we know. It would be a good thing nontheless.
