No amount of spin can mask the fact that things are not going well for the United States and its allies in Iraq. Now a bad situation has grown worse.
Bush administration officials have admitted that they had no idea what happened to a stockpile of about 380 tons of high-powered conventional explosives in Iraq. It’s another example of the administration’s failure to adequately plan and effectively carry out the war and occupation.
The explosives, which are powerful enough to destroy large buildings and trigger nuclear weapons, were stored at the Al Qaqaa facility south of Baghdad. Terrorists used identical explosives to blow up a Moscow apartment building in 1999 and a housing complex in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia last year. Although U.S. officials were warned by the International Atomic Energy Agency about the explosives, they failed to secure the site after the fighting began. It was an inexcusable mistake that could eventually haunt U.S. forces and their allies.
