............from invasion, to occupation, to problems with terrorism, to an insurgency.

The next step would be a full fledged rebellion.

An insurgency cannot exist without a substantial popular support. Overwhelming popular support is a rebellion.

The essense of power is numbers. Potestas en populi. Power can be suppressed by force-but time is generally in the favor of power.

There is a reality to symbols.
