I use Ad Aware primarily because people whose opinion I trust use it. I'm out of my depth in things that deal heavily with the registry, and by definition, all such programs do. The same people use Spybot, but I had trouble with it and discarded it. Right now I just run Ad Aware frequently--they do have a paid version too--and I seem to be doing all right so far.
